Lemon Essential Oil: TOP 5 Reasons to use it

The taste of fresh squeezed lemonade on a hot summers day. That's the first thing that comes to mind for me when I think of lemons. But did you know lemons can do so much more than quench your thirst?

Lemon (Citrus limon) Essential Oil,
has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. Native to Asia, lemons have been used for everything from preventing infectious disease to use as a digestive aid, and from mood boosters to skin cleansers. You can cook with it, clean with it and even cheer yourself up with it.

Did you know ... 1000 lemons are required to make 1 lb. of essential oil!

I've created a list of the top 5 reasons why I think Lemon Essential Oil should be one of your first essential oils. It's an oil you can use everyday in multiple ways and isn't too hard on the pocket book. A few drops can do a lot!

Without further ado ...

Top 5 Reasons to use Lemon Essential Oil

1. Detoxification
lemon stimulates the drainage of lymphatic fluid, causes the liver to increase bile production allowing toxins to easily exit your system

2. Digestion
lemons increase enzyme production which helps your body better process toxins. Limonene, one of the main components of lemon oil, is know for digestive stimulation and appetite suppression. These components also help your body draw more nutrients out of the food your eating.

3. Disinfection
lemons have a high pH (are very acidic) which is 6 times higher than vinegar. The high level of acidity changes the pH of bacteria and creates a hostile environment. Studies have shown the power of vinegar in fighting infection (90% effective). So, with a higher pH, lemon should have even stronger disinfectant properties.

25 drops of lemon oil can be added to an 8 oz spray bottle and sprayed on kitchen counters. Just wipe clean and let air dry for a citrus fresh home. Unlike bleach, lemon water as a cleaner is chemical-free and is safe to use on surfaces that come in contact with food.

Use lemon oil to clean out your coffee maker, refresh your cutting boards and even cleanse your floors. (Just be careful on granite or other stone as it can etch the surface.)

4. Diffusing

lemon essential oil, when diffused, can be just as powerful as when used topically and around the house. Lemon has a bright, rejuvenating and uplifting fragrance that can help improve concentration and energy. When diffused, lemon removes toxins from the air and leaves behind a mood-boosting aroma. Lemon can also help with allergies and respiratory issues by opening airways of sinus and lungs.

5. Detergent
whether washing your whites of scrubbing your stockpots, lemon essential oil is a great addition to any detergent. It's disinfectant powers kill germs on most surfaces while it's bright fragrance leaves everything smelling like sunshine.

Forget your laundry in the wash? Add a few drops of lemon oil to help get rid of that "funk".
